BERND BARTOLOME
is regarded as one of the first artists worldwide to merge classical visual forms of expression with the potential of artificial intelligence — long before AI became mainstream. His work marks the transition from the anthropocentric act of creation to the autonomous, non-biological mode of existence of the artwork. It emancipates itself from the finitude of the human author and establishes a new category of being, in which algorithmic processes are no longer tools, but creative actors.
Real Time
The work does not exist as a completed object, but as a permanent act in the present.
Autonomy
AI is not merely an instrument, but an active participant in the emergence of the work.
Singularity
The autonomous work is not an image, but a self-continuing form of appearance.
The Tectonic Break
The history of the visual arts can be described as a long sequence of attempts to bind human experience into matter. From the archaic kouroi through the dynamism of Bernini to the radical reduction of Brâncuși, the artwork remained tied to physical presence and to the manual gesture of its creator. With Bernd Bartolome’s work series “AI Sculpture,” however, we encounter a tectonic shift that shakes the foundations of this millennia-old system. This is not merely a technological innovation or the use of new digital tools, but a fundamental paradigm shift that redefines the very concept of the artwork. Bartolome’s work marks the transition from static object to processual event, from organic creation to algorithmic emergence. The radical nature of this work is revealed primarily in the fact that it is the first work in art history that was neither designed, nor modeled, nor manually executed in the traditional sense. It is the result of a symbiotic interplay between the human mind and a neural network, in which artificial intelligence no longer functions as a passive tool, but as an autonomous creative actor.
Manifestations
SCULPTURE
The first autonomous real-time sculpture as a permanent stream of new formal states.
Physical sculpture and digital process together form a new type of artwork.
LINES
Line, language and image enter into an open, non-final relationship with one another.
The work exists as drift, not as final form — and leaves the protected space of the white cube in order to expose itself to the urban realm: as a fragile act of placement, as disruption, as radical intervention within the flow of public space.
8SECONDS
A mode of work in which each new iteration destroys the previous work and replaces it with a new, unrepeatable appearance.
The confrontation of dance, body and artistic AI becomes an event: from the transient movement of the organic body emerges a work that detaches itself from biological finitude and continues to exist as a potentially eternal, autonomous form of appearance.
8
Eight AI beings in an existential crisis: a condensation of figure, intelligence and liminal state.
The work carries Bartolome’s thinking forward into a psychologically charged form. A hybrid work that never ends.
Genealogy
Origin
Beginning of the development of artistic AI as a work partner and construction of a distinct visual grammar.
Validation
World’s first AI sculpture as a connection between notation, code, NFT and physical sculpture.
Biennale
Work entity in autonomous forms of appearance: 8SECONDS, SCULPTURE, LINES and 8.
Singularity
No decorative fragments: the goal is the autonomous appearance of the work as a singular state.
Simulation, Ontology, Anti-Archive
The inner logic of the autonomous work: real time, productive destruction, ontological shift and the relationship between present and archive.
What the work means at its core: it is no longer a completed object, but a continuous state. It emerges, disappears, overwrites itself and asserts its reality not through duration, but through presence.
The 8-Second Rhythm
In SCULPTURE / 8SECONDS, a new work continuously emerges and overwrites the previous one. This simulation makes the principle of productive destruction visible.
- Current Mode PRESENT MODE
- Generated Works 0
- Archive Status DELETED 99.9%
Ontological Shift
Bartolome’s approach differs radically from the traditional concept of the artwork. The following visualization compares object and entity.
The Anti-Archive
When art permanently overwrites itself, what remains is not possession, but presence. The chart shows the relationship between generated works and works currently existing.
Work Phases & Manifestations
The idea of the work moves through different medial appearances: SCULPTURE / 8SECONDS, data stream, film, language and autonomous figure.
The first autonomous real-time sculpture continuously generates new forms in an 8-second rhythm.
ARRIVE
Data streams and the movements of real human beings become material of the work.
LINES / FILM
Language, line, film and reception become part of a work form that cannot be brought to closure.
HIOB / EVA
HIOB
A dialogical artistic figure between suffering, metaphysical trial and digital contemporaneity.
