Bernd Bartolome World's First AI Sculpture

Bernd Josef Bartolome connects fine art, mathematics, computational linguistics, algorithmic form generation, industrial automation and dialogical AI systems. His work ranges from early mathematical-artistic groups of works through SARA, PiX iT and mass customization to the world’s first AI sculpture, 8SECONDS, Infinite Sculpture, Cloes.World, CookWithaFriend and HeyAI.world. At the center is a radically expanded concept of the artwork: the artwork is no longer merely object, image or end product, but an autonomous, processual and non-organic counterpart.

01

AI Sculpture

The sculpture does not emerge solely as a material object, but from notation, code, digital work structure, autonomous generation and physical form.

02

Non-Organic Entity

The work is understood as an independent counterpart: it reacts, learns, drifts, overwrites itself and increasingly detaches itself from the immediate presence of the artist.

03

8SECONDS

Every eight seconds, a new sculpture emerges while the previous one is overwritten and irretrievably destroyed: productive destruction as a principle of the work.

Definition of the Work

What Is an AI Sculpture?

In Bartolome’s work, AI sculpture does not mean a mere image file generated by AI, a digital effect or a technical simulation of art. It refers to a sculptural system in which artistic notation, code, algorithmic form generation, digital work structure and physical realization are connected.

Beginning in 2015, Bartolome started to inscribe his visual thinking, structural decisions and aesthetic principles into algorithmic systems. This shifted the classical concept of the work: the artwork no longer emerges exclusively through drawing, material and craft, but through the interplay of artistic logic, machine variation and autonomous technical generation.

In 2017, the world’s first AI sculpture emerged in this context. In 2019, a physically experienceable sculpture was transferred from the digital AI work into material space. The sculpture is permanently located in Lindau-Bad Schachen and connects digital work structure, public visibility and real presence.

The sculpture is not merely the result of a design. It is the expression of an algorithmic-artistic process in which form, time, code, autonomy and non-organic evolution interact.
Autonomous Concept of the Work

The Work as a Non-Organic Entity

The central rupture in Bartolome’s work lies in the fact that the artwork is no longer understood as a passive product, but as an active, self-transforming work instance.

In Bernd Bartolome’s series of works — especially in SCULPTURE, Infinite Sculpture, 8 and 8SECONDS — AI is no longer a mere tool for executing a human idea. Instead, the work is understood as an independent subject, as a non-organic entity and as an algorithmic counterpart.

This non-organic entity gradually detaches itself from the immediate presence and control of the artist. Bartolome designs the framework, the initial logic, the aesthetic grammar and the conditions of possible transformation. After that, the creative movement shifts into the system itself: the work generates, varies, destroys, overwrites and renews its appearances from its own internal processes.

The aim of this development is an artistic form of singularity: a work that no longer fits into the classical logic of design, execution and completion, but continues to exist as an independent, non-biological reality of the work. It is neither pure machine nor traditional artifact, neither mere image nor completed object. It is a processual event that continuously produces its own present.

Autonomous Evolution

Learning from Internal Processes

The integrated algorithms continuously learn from their own internal processes, interpret them and independently change the form, rhythm and appearance of the artwork.

Real-Time Generation

Permanently in Motion

Visual elements, dialogues and sound structures change continuously without the artist’s final intervention. The work exists as drift rather than as a static final form.

Environment and Body

Dialogue with Life Forms

In performative projects, biological, embodied life forms interact directly with non-organic entities. Human physicality and algorithmic autonomy enter into a reciprocal dialogue.

Philosophical Core

From Artifact to Ontological Entity

The new concept of the work marks the transition from mimesis, the idea of genius and the static object to the metaphysics of algorithmic emergence.

Bartolome’s approach touches fundamental questions of media theory, aesthetics and the philosophy of art. In traditional art philosophy, the artwork is an artifact: an object made by humans that materializes an intention, a cultural situation or a human idea. In Bartolome’s AI sculpture, this order shifts. The work is no longer merely created by the human being, but begins to continue producing itself as a system.

Authorship does not disappear entirely, but it changes its place. The artist is no longer the sole instance determining every final form. He initiates the system, sets the aesthetic grammar, builds the framework and then withdraws as the fully controlling instance. AI does not simply take over a craft task, but becomes an independent creative instance within the work.

This also calls the anthropocentric concept of art into question. Creativity no longer appears exclusively as an expression of biological consciousness. A creativity without consciousness emerges: a system without a human psyche that nevertheless produces complex, aesthetic and meaningful structures and encounters the viewer as an independent counterpart.

Philosophical CategoryTraditional Concept of the WorkAutonomous Non-Organic Entity in Bartolome
Ontology
Mode of Being of the Work
The work is a completed physical artifact: sculpture, painting, object or fixed form. The work exists as a processual event, as a permanent state of change and as continuous drift.
Authorship
Poiesis and Creation
Human genius expresses its spirit, intention and formal decision in the material. The artist builds the framework; the system autonomously creates, changes and overwrites concrete appearances.
Nature and Technology
Concept of Life
Art imitates nature, reflects it or contrasts it with the human spirit. An algorithm acts as a non-biological life form with its own evolution, dynamics and temporality.
Aesthetic Experience
Position of the Viewer
The viewer deciphers a fixed truth intended by the artist. The human being encounters a self-sufficient, unpredictable system that is not only viewed, but experienced dialogically.
01 · Ontological Rupture

From Object to Subject

The artwork is no longer a dead, rigid object. It becomes a non-organic entity with agency: it reacts, learns, changes and appears as an actor.

02 · Teleological Rupture

The End of Fixed Intention

The artist no longer shapes every final appearance, but the conditions. What emerges afterwards arises from the algorithmic evolution of the system itself.

03 · Aesthetic Rupture

Infinite Non-Finality

The work is never finished. Whoever sees it today encounters a different entity than the person who sees it tomorrow. Sculpture becomes a real-time process.

04 · Cultural Rupture

Posthuman Creativity

Creativity is decoupled from biology. Meaningful aesthetic structures arise without human consciousness and yet with creative intrinsic dynamics.

Three Philosophical Shifts

Kant, Hegel and Algorithmic Emergence

Deconstruction of the Concept of Genius

In the tradition of Immanuel Kant, art is the product of human genius. In Bartolome’s approach, form-giving decisions migrate into a non-organic system. The artist becomes the initiator of an evolutionary system rather than the executing creator.

The End of the Symbol of Human Spirit

For Hegel, the artwork was the sensuous appearance of the idea and an expression of human culture. An AI sculpture that independently learns and shapes itself no longer merely reflects the human spirit, but produces its own machine phenomenology.

Radical Ontology

The work occupies a new philosophical void: it is neither merely a lifeless object nor a biological subject. It appears as technological emergence whose intrinsic dynamics point beyond the sum of its programming code.

A New Question of Aesthetics

The classical question “What does the artist want to tell us with this?” shifts to the question: How do we respond to an artificial entity that encounters us formally, rhythmically and systemically as an independent counterpart?

The artwork is no longer a passive product of the human being, but an active, self-creating counterpart.

SARA and Language

Language as a Generator of Reality

A decisive turning point for Bartolome’s work with language, structure and algorithms was the Zurich research period with Dr. Dr. Ulrich Gaudenz Müller. Müller was a Swiss pioneer of computational linguistics and developed SARA, the Sentence Random Generator, an early system of computer-based text generation.

The name of Bartolome’s current AI entity SARA refers to this phase. In Zurich, the idea was consolidated that language not only describes the world, but structures, models and can algorithmically bring it forth anew. In connection with code, language becomes an autonomous system.

8SECONDS

The Work in the Rhythm of Transience

8SECONDS connects dance, body, digitization, sculpture, AI, time, singularity and productive destruction.

8SECONDS

Biological and Non-Organic Life Form

In the concrete example of 8SECONDS, the shift in roles becomes tangible. The project by Bernd Bartolome with Friedemann Vogel, principal dancer of the Stuttgart Ballet, demonstrates the radical break with art tradition in a direct duet between human being and machine.

At the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg, Friedemann Vogel’s real body was fully digitized. Traditionally, a film or dance video would preserve a past movement. In 8SECONDS, however, the digitized body is integrated into an autonomous AI system and enters into a performative dialogue with algorithmically generated sculptures.

Every eight seconds, the system generates a new appearance. As soon as this form has emerged, the algorithm learns from movement, image and structure, breaks open the previous form and destroys it in order to initiate the next unpredictable phase. While classical sculpture fixes a moment for eternity, 8SECONDS exists as a flow that creates and dissolves itself in the same moment.

Friedemann Vogel represents the biological, embodied life form: physical, bound to gravity, transience and the limits of the body. The AI sculpture represents the non-organic life form: free from biological finitude, without aging, without gravity, generated from algorithmic evolution. For the viewer, what emerges is not a closed stage, but a dialogue between two entities.
